Bran Castle
royal residence (1920-1947)


     The citadel of Brasov donated Bran Castle to Queen Maria on December 1st 1920. 
An year from then, Bran castle underwent restorations made with experts brought from 
Sibiu, Turnisor, the Baier brothers; Michael and Leopold Rosner.During the 
restaurations works the worshiping chapel, arranged in a former 
artillery man's room, was painted by Arthur Verona with 
representations of Evangelistic symbols, among wich a scene in 
which Queen Maria, assisted by prince Nicholas, symbolically 
offers the castle to princess Ileana,signifyng the will 
expressed in her later testament. The sarcophagus containing 
Voievode Mircea's mortal remains was laid down in the chapel. 
   The castle's indoors, where the castellans 
medieval institution functioned, werw turned 
into two dwellings for Queen Maria, 
outbuildings and other rooms with residential 
functions.
    Beside the buildings and the terrain 
previously belonging to the citadel of 
   BRAN CASTLE      Brasov, consisted of those Queen Maria recived 
  DONATION DOCUMENT   later, that are: from the Bran communes the 
town office buildings, formerly used to be into Bran Plasa 
administration moved in 1922, Maguricea forest and from Bran 
Orthodox Church, the terrain on which Archduchess Ileana supported by the industri-
alist Malaxa would build a hospital,"Queen's Heart",during the second World War. 
    The transformation of the medieval Bran into a Royal 
Palace imposed some arrangements which would have to assure 
its functioning and a grade of confort. This way, for the 
drinking water supply there were captured 7 rivers from 
Magura Bran, known as the "Queen's Rivers". On September 1932 
an electrical turbine is set to work and, as shown by the 
electric power receipts kept by some famelies who lived nearby 
the castle, they receved in return electric power to supply 
   THE CASTLE PARK     their houses. 
    Princess Ileana, settled in Bran in1932, after she married 
Anton of Habsburg, she would devote her 15 years lived there to 
help poor people and, during the Second World War to care for 
the wounded people as a medical nurse at "The Queen's Heart 
Hospital".
   At the begining of the year 1948,"princess Ileana" was 
forced to leave Bran. She will come back after 42 years have   QUEEN MARIA IN    
passed and for the last time in Bran which she loved so much.  THE CASTLE PARK   
   Her next visit was programmed for Easter (1991), but she didn't make it because 
she died in February 1991 earlier that she would have imagined.
